    What is identity diffusion?

The word “identity diffusion” describes a stage in a person’s identity formation process. It’s usually the stage of adolescence when a person hasn’t fully established their social relationships or identified their personality activities – and isn’t actively attempting to do so. They will have to make a succession of decisions and responsibilities in order to grow and define their identity.

A developmental and clinical psychologist, James E. Marcia has worked with children and adults.
Marcia is most recognized for his studies and publications on psychological development, especially teenage psychosocial development and lifelong identity formation.
Marcia’s identity status theory mixes ego identification with teenage emotions.

Marcia expanded on Erikson’s discoveries regarding identity, describing four distinct identity states, which include identity diffusion, identity achievement, foreclosure, and moratorium.
