    At a young age, Mandela learned that his freedom, as well as the freedom of all black people, was being restricted by racism. His desire for independence became a fascination for freedom that was shared by all of his brothers and sisters. Ultimately, this transformed him from a fearful man to a fearless rebel. He foregoes the security of stable family life in order to advance a greater cause. He joined the African National Congress, which transformed him from a fearful young man into a fearless fighter against racism.

    Mandela sacrificed the comforts of stable family life in order to fight for the freedom of his countrymen. He joined the African National Congress, transforming his outlook from a terrified young man into a fearless person who was battling racial prejudice and discrimination against race.

    In 1961, he was arrested, but the same year he founded the ‘Umkhonto we Sizwe’ (Spear of the Nation or MK), a group dedicated to armed resistance to apartheid.

    Then he departed the nation for military training in Algeria, as well as to organize for other MK members to get military training. He was detained upon his return for unlawfully exiting the country and inciting a strike.

    His defense was undertaken by him. In November 1962, he was found guilty and sentenced to 5 years in prison.

    He was accused with sabotage and condemned to life imprisonment while serving his term in the Rivonia Trial. He was imprisoned at Robben Island for the first 18 years of his life.
